A pearl of thought

The main focus in the Typography Course is an in-depth examination of type and writing in all its uses. The course seeks to promote an understanding of typography as a sociological, aesthetic form of expression, to practice typography as ?
The original meaning of Interpretari was ?to mediate.? This mediating is precisely the aim of typography; to render the text explicit, legible, to publish, to make public. The language of Typography expresses itself on a graphic, visual level through the style and scale of type, through its spatial organisation, distribution, flow, and in the relationship between type and medium. The basis of a typographic system is the unequal distribution of coded and normative signs in linear sequence within a closed space. The type line forces every meaning to translate itself into a successive linear punctuation. All machines for typesetting, whether mechanical, electronic or digital, work in this manner, not only reproducing information, but also giving it structure and form.
The task of typography is to make writing visible - to make visible the fact of its being a translation from voice into letter, from letter into letter. The task of typography is to determine the degree of divergence. The graphic texture (of a type line) does not demand to be set in a specific style; it demands the effect of its modification or the play of valencies among styles, the vagueness of the difference of its effects. The measure of typography is the book. On closer examination, this book turns out to be an old book full of footnotes, commentaries and references to older books. Typography draws its vitality from the atmosphere of such an image, from the memories of faded cultures and the desire to create new things.
